unRAID USB boot drive creation using Windows

1. Download which ever version of unRAID you like from the Lime Tech download page

2. Download the version of UNetbootin for your operating system from here

3. Go to the folder that has the version of unRAID you downloaded from step one. If you downloaded version 4.7 the filename would be "unRAID Server 4.7 AiO.zip"

Make a copy of the downloaded unRAID file and change the name to "unRAID Server 4.7 AiO.iso" Note the ISO ending

4. If you are on a Windows machine you will need to click the Windows logo button and then "Computer".  I am running Windows 7 so if you are on previous versions of Windows you may need to click on the "Start" button and then "My Computer". You should see your flash drive listed. In the photo below mine is listed as USB_DRIVE (E:)

5. Right click on the drive and select Format. The window below should appear

6. Set the values to:

  • FAT32 for the File System
  • 4096 bytes for the Allocation unit size
  • UNRAID (all caps) for the Volume label
  • Quick Format for the Format options

7. Press the Start button and allow the format to take place.  NOTE: this will wipe all data off the drive as the below message states:

8. Once the process is finished you can close the Format window.  You should have a drive that looks like this in Explorer

9. Launch UNetbootin and allow UNetbootin to run.

10. You should then see the UNetbootin window

11. Select the Diskimage and set the values:

  • ISO from the dropdown
  • the "unRAID Server 4.7 AiO.iso" as the image
  • Type: USB Drive
  • Drive: E:\ - the listing here may be a little different. I suggest doing this step with only ONE USB drive plugged in

13. Click OK

14. If you get any messages about over writing any files that exist just say "Yes to all"

15. Once the process is complete you can close the UNetbootin application

16. We can now delete some files from the UNRAID flash drive.  If you want to clean the flash drive off a little and give yourself as much room on there as possible you can delete the:

  • make_bootable.bat
  • syslinux.exe
  • ubnfilel.txt
  • ubnpathl.txt
  • readme.txt - leave if you want to
  • license.txt - leave if you want to
17. Now you can safely eject the unRAID flash drive from your machine and use it to boot your unRAID server.

NOTES:
1. On my Windows 7 machine I have UAC (User Account Control) settings turned all the way down.  I am not sure if the default settings, which are higher then mine, will cause any problems.  If you find the process is not working, turn UAC down from within Control Panel -> User Accounts.
